1. KINDER JOY :-

Kinder Joy (formerly known as Kinder Merendero in Italy and Bahrain) is a candy made by Italian confectionery company Ferrero as part of its Kinder brand of products. It has plastic egg-shaped packaging that splits into two; one half contains layers of cocoa and milk cream, and the other half contains a toy and a spoon on top of the wrapper. Kinder Joy was first launched in Italy in 2001 and as of 2018 was sold in 170 countries. Kinder Joy is a brand within the Kinder line of chocolate products sold by Ferrero. It has a plastic egg-shaped package with a tab to open it into two halves. One sealed half contains layers of cocoa and milk-flavoured creams topped with two cocoa wafer spheres, to be eaten with an included spoon. The other half contains a toy. As of 2015, Kinder Joy is produced in Poland, India, South Africa, Ecuador, Cameroon, and China. Its main ingredients include sugar, vegetable oils (palm and sunflower), milk and wheat.

History of Kinder Joy

Ferrero launched Kinder Joy in Italy in 2001. It has been sold in Spain since 2004, in Germany since May 2006 and in China and India since 2007. It was launched in Australia and the United States in 2018.

In 2011, Ferrero opened a factory in Baramati, India, to make the eggs, in addition to other products including Tic Tacs. In 2015, the company opened its first factory in China in the Xiaoshan District of Hangzhou, which produced Kinder Joy as its first manufacturing line. As of September 2015 Kinder Joy was one of the highest selling candy products in the Chinese market and had received Nielsen China’s Breakthrough Innovation Award.

Kinder Joy became available in Ireland in 2015. In November 2015, Ferrero announced that it would sell the eggs in the United Kingdom, starting in December 2015.

In May 2017, it was announced that Kinder Joy would be launched in the United States in 2018, as a similar product by Kinder, Kinder Surprise, is banned in the U.S. by a federal law. Specifically, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act bans all food products that contain non-nutritive objects embedded within them.

The Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has put a warning on the consumption of the delicious treat known as Kinder Joy.

About a fortnight back, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) had recalled Kinder Joy chocolates for grave safety concerns.

Kinder Joy, which is mostly consumed by children, had found its way into schools and homes alike. The Ferrero-owned child delicacy allegedly contains a bacterium known as Salmonella, which is associated with contaminated foods.

Kinder Joy contains Salmonella, a bacterium found in contaminated food. Salmonella causes a gut infection known as gastroenteritis. Children or people who consume Kinder Joy chocolates risk contracting gastroenteritis. Kinder Joy chocolates retail at about ksh.120 in Kenya.

According to COMESA, they issued the warning after realizing the dangers that the Kinder Joy chocolates pose to its COMESA market consumers.

“The Commission has also established that some Kinder chocolate products are imported and marketed in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA),” stated the commission on Tuesday, April 12, 2022.

“In consideration of the risk, some of the COMESA member states such as Kenya, Egypt, and Sudan have launched a probe into Kinder products in their respective markets,” it added.

In addition, the commission has issued a public information to all Kinder Joy consumers of the country to be cautious about the same. It even encouraged buyers to return the purchased product to the outlets as they may get a refund.

“In view of the foregoing, the commission would like to inform the general public to exercise caution and avoid the purchase or the consumption of the above recalled products and return them to the point of purchase for a full refund,’ said the commission.

The Kinder surprise eggs are banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States of America since it contains non-nutritive object. Also, it was banned since it is enclosed in toys or trinkets, which is against the FDA regulations. Importing Kinder Joy to the US is illegal.

Why are Kinder eggs banned in the US?

Kinder Surprise eggs are straight up banned in the US, and it’s illegal to import them there, too. This is because of a regulation set out by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – which is given its powers by the US Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act of 1938.

Essentially, the law dictates that any food with a ‘non-nutritive object embedded’ – including toys embedded inside confectionery items – is not allowed.

Of course, this would be referencing the plasticky capsule inside the Kinder Surprise egg, which you can only reach once you’ve eaten the layers of milk and white chocolate surrounding it.

Back in 2011, more than 60,000 Kinder eggs being snuck into the States were seized by US Customs and Border Protection.

A spokesperson for Ferrero said at the time: ‘Kinder Surprise is not available in the United States as the [FDA] has taken the position that a specific regulation relating to non-nutritive objects embedded in food stuff makes Kinder Surprise not suitable for sale and distribution in the US.

‘The safety of its consumers, especially children, is and has always been Ferrero’s number one priority. Ferrero is absolutely dedicated to providing the safest products possible, from product design to production to final use, going beyond regulatory requirements.’

Though you can’t get them in the States, you can buy Kinder Surprise eggs in neighbouring Canada and Mexico. (But seriously, don’t try to take them into the US.)

Interestingly, the South American nation of Chile also banned Kinder Surprise eggs in 2016.
